|Scholarly Writing for Educators||Learn how to write scholarly papers using archival research, documented sources and electronic databases. Working closely with the instructor and a professor in your area of study, you will develop publication-quality papers. Learn conceptualization, argumentation and evidence, and citation and referencing. Practice peer editing and review to address style, audience, organization and mechanics.|
|Survey Issues in Bilingual and Second Language Education||Focus on the discourse of diverse paradigms in bilingual/ESL education. Discuss current pedagogical, theoretical, historical, legislative and other issues in the field. Identify program models in bilingual/ESL education, including their philosophical foundations, instructional frameworks, and the planning and design of program evaluation.|
|Diversity in Educational Settings||Explore the social context of education and teaching in a pluralistic society. Examine schools and society in relation to historical and contemporary issues of diversity.|
|Research for the Classroom Teacher||Learn research methodology to address the problems and needs of classroom teachers. The course emphasizes interpreting professional literature and practitioner research in educational settings. Prerequisite: TED 5304 with a grade of “B” or better.|
|Current Topics in Early Childhood Education||Develop competencies necessary to deal effectively with early childhood instruction including curriculum, concepts, teaching strategies, and skills necessary to integrate content and teaching strategies. The course may be repeated for credit when the topic varies.|
|Literacy Development in Spanish||Focus on the critical components in literacy development while concentrating on the Spanish language and its conventions. Discuss reading pedagogies and their historical foundations in various Spanish-speaking countries and the integration of bilingual/multicultural literature. Course taught in Spanish.|
|Teaching Content in Spanish||Study the development of academic discourse in Spanish in the areas of mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts. Examine the state curriculum standards and professional standards in each of the specializations. Course taught in Spanish.|
|Dual Language Instruction||Research foundations and program principles for dual language education as you are introduced to second language acquisition and biliteracy in dual language education; learn how theoretical frameworks and research foundations for dual language education are connected to practical application. Survey successful mature dual language education programs. Focus on literacies of the U.S.-Mexico border and the literacy education of emergent bilinguals/English language learners.|
|Place, Practice and Identity||How powerful is the physical space in which teaching and learning occurs outside the mind? How can educators design such spaces? Explore these questions and more by considering how social settings, networks, and communities of practice – and the roles that members in these settings – influence how students engage in particular practices and learn new ways of thinking and being. Particular emphasis on specific student populations under study include Latinos, and those defined as marginalized for this course, including emerging bilinguals, migrants, immigrants, and others.|
